This article by Chris Hitchens doesn't deal solely with fundamentalism, but it is amazingly written and intelligent, regardless : http://www.slate.com/id/2299959
Literal translation of religious texts has always been a source of hatred and violence in this world...or rather it easily allows ppl of fundamentalist faiths to justify horrible acts in the name of serving and "saving" god(from logical, scientific denial of religion's descriptions of our life and universe) . This is why I am against fundamentalist beliefs in ANY religion. It isn't necessarily the religion or texts themselves...they were written thousands of years ago in a much more violent world, where ppl were lucky to reach 30....but the literal translation allows ppl like this asshole ( or ppl like the Westboro Baptists) to say they "must be right". "it's in the bible". I don't think so.....you can't fight the future ppl, modern technology and information WILL eventually overtake fundamentalism, except for a small percentage of ppl who will not disband from their beliefs out of fear of hell or tradition or whatever. We aren't a world of Christians, Muslims and Hindus etc. We are a world of humans, period. we all came from the stars and we will all return to them....regardless of what religion says is true or untrue.
p.s. I realize religion is not the only force at play in the Norway tragedy, but regardless, it is today's target :) Religion can be a great and life-changing thing for some people. But when taken too far, it separates us all....allowing people to read whatever they want out of their religious texts.
